Foreman of Steel Structures Operation
“I like to puzzle over the design and look for the best solution. In a smaller locksmith workshop, I would never get to do such a beautiful job. And when I’m moving around Prague and I see what we have managed to create with our own hands, I’m really proud.”
Metrostav has always been part of Jirka’s life. His dad worked here, he himself got a locksmith apprenticeship at Metrostav and he gained his first experience here when, in 1991, Prague’s metro line B was being bored and he joined the group of locksmiths at Palmovka Metro Station. After a few years, he became a supervisor of the group, and now he manages the team of locksmiths and welders from the position of foreman.
He has risen through the craft from the beginning. At first, it was routine locksmith work, but then, bigger and bigger challenges in the form of large steel structures came along. He participated, for example, in the construction of Střížkov Metro Station, many railway bridges in the Czech Republic, and even in the award-winning Troja bridge.
“We had great leaders. They were practitioners, masters of the craft who taught us to think during our work and supported us, so we would not be afraid to come up with new ideas for manufacturing processes. I will be forever grateful for this school.”
And we are grateful as well that he got a “good school”. Jirka, in addition to his job as foreman, is a mentor to the students who are learning through Metrostav. He thus passes on the tradition of craftsmanship and being able to cope with challenges to a new generation of craftsmen.
